Lamattina Legal’s Principal, Maria Lamattina, was awarded the Attorney General’s Community Service Law Award at the Law Society Gala Dinner in October 2023. The award recognised her service over more than two decades to her clients, particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations, refugees and asylum seekers.
In thanking the Attorney General for this recognition, Maria Lamattina drew attention to the need for the profession to recognise and reflect in its composition all sections of the community it seeks to support, and to listen and adapt legal practice to be more effective in meeting the needs of all members of the community. Maria also dedicated her award to “all my clients, and those within and outside the profession who are often unrecognised and unsupported, but who make this work possible, and who have the lived experience, wisdom and knowledge to lead and transform our profession for the better”.
